4 Summer Camps for Young Aspiring Writers!

If your child has the writing bug,
check out these summer camp programs!

All art forms are vehicles for storytelling, and for most performing arts disciplines, this storytelling is based in the written word. From the swooning, eleven o’clock number in a musical theater performance to the over-the-top stand-up routine about a family vacation gone wrong, many artists use words to create universes that speak to their unique perspectives. Many of our campers here at PAW love to use their language arts foundation from school and combine it with their passion for creative writing in order to create inspired projects, whether it’s through film, comedy, songwriting, or debate.

If your child wants to be the next Stephen Spielberg or Stephen Sondheim, check out the following summer camp programs to ignite the spark!

Is your child:

…A Visual Thinker? Try Filmmaking Camp

If your child is visually expressive, a great way for them to get their ideas across to the world is to attend a filmmaking camp. Your child will learn how to pitch and refine their ideas through writing exercises, storyboard their concept, craft a script, and then—lights, camera, action! During film camp, children also learn how to work with others collaboratively as they team up with other campers to write, act, film, edit, and present their final project. In filmmaking camp, the only limit is imagination.

…Musically Motivated? Try Vocal Recording Camp

For the kid who has a song in their heart that they need to let out, the best way to spend their summer is at a vocal recording camp. At this camp, children are taught vocal technique and song interpretation, the finer points or recording, mixing, and mastering a vocal track, and even learn how to write their own songs. The campers learn to use their voice as a tool to convey the feelings described in the song lyrics and to complement the mood of the music. Learning to channel a whole spectrum of emotion in lyrics will be a strong supplement to their language arts education at school and will greatly aid their overall emotional development.

…The Class Clown? Try Comedy Camp

At last, the perfect outlet for the kids who can’t stop cracking jokes in class! Young stand-up hopefuls with quick wits will benefit from going to comedy camp. At comedy camps, children take their experiences from everyday life and turn them into entertaining stories that express their unique point-of-view. Campers learn how to properly write jokes and sketches, structuring and delivering them in a way that emphasizes the humor of a specific situation. Improv workshops at camp will teach kids how to think fast on their feet, while longer, storytelling workshops will provide them the opportunity to slowly unravel a narrative and end it with a powerful punchline. If you’ve got an up-and-coming comedian at home, you can’t go wrong with a comedy camp this summer.

…A Visionary Leader? Try Debate Camp

For children seeking to develop the power of persuasion, look no further than debate camp. PAW’s noncompetitive debate camp will sharpen your child’s writing skills through fun games that organize and polish their ideas and turn them into arguments. Children become adept listeners and critical thinkers by learning how to express themselves clearly and succinctly through hands-on activities like round table discussions and vocabulary building. At the end of the camp, children grow a deep appreciation for the power of words and are then able to use them as a tool for change throughout their lives.

There are so many ways to tell a story and mixing and matching writing-based camps is a fantastic way for your child to develop their own path as a writer. Whether it’s nurturing a lifelong passion or a way to get an edge in language arts classes in the fall, writing camps inspire children to create something bigger than themselves.
